2.19.4. Licensing examples

Example 2.2. A simple example

Scenario: You would like to monitor 35 Windows servers, 32 Linux servers and 15 Unix servers.

License requirements: You need a license for at least 82 servers (35+32+15=82). On the price list, the closest item to this number is 100, so you need a license for 100 protected hosts.

Example 2.3. Another simple example

Scenario: You would like to monitor access to 5 Windows servers, 5 routers and 35 network switches.

License requirements: In this case, the customer needs a license for at least 45 devices (5+5+35=45). On the price list, the closest item to this number is 50, so you need a license for 50 hosts.

Example 2.4. Jump hosts

Scenario: You would like to monitor 210 Windows servers and 120 Linux servers. To access the protected servers, your users use a jump host as an interim: the users have to log in to the jump host to access the Windows and Linux servers. You want to deploy Balabit’s Privileged Session Management, Shell Control Box between the user workstations (clients) and the jump host.

License requirements: You need a license at least for 331 devices (210+120+1=331), the jump host also counts as a protected server. On the price list, the closest item above 331 is 500 hosts, so you need a license package for 500 protected hosts.

Example 2.5. High-availability (HA) cluster

Scenario: You would like to monitor 200 Windows servers and 200 Linux servers. To minimize the risk of downtime, you want to deploy two physical PSM appliances as a HA cluster.

License requirements: You need a license at least for 400 devices (200+200=400), and you also need the HA option. On the price list, the closest item above 400 is 500 hosts, so you need a license package for 500 protected hosts with the HA option.

Example 2.6. Load-balancing cluster

Scenario: You would like to monitor 450 servers. You want to deploy 3 PSM appliances as a load-balancing cluster. (You already have a solution to balance the load between the PSM appliances.)

License requirements: You need three separate licenses (one for each PSM appliance). Each license must be valid for at least for 450 devices. On the price list, the closest item above 450 is 500 hosts, so you need 3 license packages for 500 protected hosts.

The reason why you need each SCB license to cover every server is that because otherwise if an SCB breaks down, or the load balancer fails to properly balance the connections, your users will not be able to access the monitored servers. Note that the load-balancing solution is not part of Balabit's offering.
