Evaluating the BalaBit Shell Control Box

The evaluation version of the BalaBit Shell Control Box (SCB) is available as a VMware virtual machine. To run the virtual machine, you need to download the evaluation version of SCB and an evaluation license using your MyBalaBit account, and install the VMware Player application on your computer. These steps are described in detail below.

1. Download the VMware Player application

Visit the http://vmware.com/download/player/ webpage, complete the registration form required to download the VMware Player.

Accept the End User License Agreement, and download latest version of the player for your operating system (the Microsoft Windows version is about 170 MB, the Linux version is about 70 MB).

2. Install the VMware Player application

On Microsoft Windows, start the VMware-player-X.X.X.exe file.

On Linux systems, unpack the downloaded VMware-player-X.X.X.tar.gz file, then run the vmware-install.pl file. The default installation options work in most situations.

3. Download the BalaBit Shell Control Box VMware image and the evaluation license

Login to your MyBalaBit accout at http://www.balabit.com/mybalabit/ and request access to the evaluation version of SCB at https://www.balabit.hu/mybalabit/evalreq/. If you do not have an account, sign up for a new account. Please note that new accounts are not immediately available; you will receive an e-mail when your account is activated. Similarly, you will receive an e-mail when you can access the SCB VMware image.

Visit the https://www.balabit.com/mybalabit/downloads/ page, and select the SCB evaluation image. Select stable > vmware images, and download the latest version of SCB (~ 100 MB).

Visit the https://www.balabit.com/mybalabit/licenses/ page and download the SCB N1025 license. Evaluation licenses are valid for a month.

Unpack the downloaded files into a directory.

4. Start SCB

Start the VMware Player application and select the Open an existing Virtual Machine option.

Navigate to the SCB.vmx file in the folder where you extracted the downloaded files.

The VMware Player application may ask whether you have copied or moved your virtual machine. Select the I moved it option.

Wait until the SCB virtual machine boots. A login prompt appears.

5. Connect to SCB

The SCB virtual machine listens for connections from your machine on the 192.168.1.1 IP address. To be able to connect to SCB, your computer must be in the same subnet. Configure an alias IP address for your network card. See the BalaBit Shell Control Box Administrator Guide for details at http://www.balabit.com/dl/html/scb-admin-guide_en.html/ch03s01.html.

6. Configure SCB

Complete the Welcome Wizard as described in http://www.balabit.com/dl/html/scb-admin-guide_en.html/ch03s02.html. Upload the evaluation license file you have downloaded with your MyBalaBit account. The easiest way to test the functionality of SCB is to configure it for Bastion mode, and set up an IP address from the same network of your computer.

Set up a Windows host on the same subnet, and enable Remote Desktop (RDP) access to it.

Configure a connection on SCB to forward the incoming RDP to the Windows and test it. See http://www.balabit.com/dl/html/scb-admin-guide_en.html/ch03s03.html for details.

7. Replay your session

Download the BalaBit Audit Player from SCB, download the audit trails of your sessions, and replay them. See http://www.balabit.com/dl/html/scb-admin-guide_en.html/ch06.html for details.
